About the Organization

Accelerating Farm Incomes (AFI) is a development project funded by the Walmart Foundation to strengthen agricultural production systems in peri-urban and rural locations of Telangana State, India. The project began in October 2019,  will contribute substantially to technology diffusion, capacity building, micro-enterprise development, and farmer-market linkages. The project is expected to achieve an immediate impact on improved yields, enhance resource use efficiency, and therefore increase farm incomes in a semi-arid agriculture system.

Job Description

The project began in October 2019,  will contribute substantially to technology diffusion, capacity building, micro-enterprise development, and farmer-market linkages. The project is expected to achieve an immediate impact on improved yields, enhance resource use efficiency, and therefore increase farm incomes in a semi-arid agriculture system.

Job Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in community mobilization and sensitization for the adoption of best agronomic practices.

  • Identify training needs, production constraints and devise solutions to address the problems at hand.

  • Identify technologies, practices, tools, equipment, varieties, and partners that have the greatest potential to improve the agricultural productivity and farm incomes of peri-urban farmers and facilitate their dissemination to the farmers.

  • Actively participate in developing messages, structures, and systems to continually improve Agricultural Extension Services to improve the productivity of peri-urban farmers and help them diversify into high-value horticulture crops for higher farm incomes.

  • Monitor and report on the adoption of the introduced innovations/technologies and identify any constraints preventing their access and/adoption and identify feasible solutions.

  • Directly take lead in establishing and monitoring of crop demonstrations, collection of crops cut data, and organizing field days, farmers training programs and assist project field staff in delivering training to farmers, monitoring and reporting on their attendance

  • Coordinate and work closely with district agriculture and horticulture department authorities to ensure that they are informed about the project activities and their inputs are included in the farmers' training and crop advisory.

  • Actively participate in the program reviews, assessments, monitoring activities, learning and evaluations, and in the overall implementation of the project activities; develop future follow-on activity and any task as required.

  • The agronomist will also participate in ensuring a culture of learning and program improvement, through publication and dissemination of agronomic materials and evaluation information.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • MSc Agriculture with at least 5 years or BSc Agriculture with at least 8 years of field experience in agricultural extension services, agricultural programming, farmer's training, and community mobilization.

  • Excellent knowledge of agronomy of Rice, Maize, Pulses, and Vegetable crops and experience of providing agronomic/crop advisory services to farmers.

  • Be a self-starter, motivated, be able to work independently, and take initiative.

  • Excellent English language, verbal, and written communication skills; proficiency in the Telugu Language is preferred.

  • Good computer skills, i.e. MS Office, MS excel

This position will be based in Mahabubnagar/Medak/Rangareddy district, Telangana State, India
