Project Duration: 5 Years

Project Background

Project Vruddhi is an ambitious project being jointly implemented by CARE and Action Against Hunger in the state of Gujarat. The project is financially supported by The Power of Nutrition, an independent charitable foundation, with matching funds from the consortium partners.

The overall goal of Project Vruddhi is “to support Health and ICDS Departments, GoG to achieve accelerated progress towards nutrition outcomes identified under POSHAN Abhiyan”.

The project aims to contribute to reduction in children’s stunting and severe wasting by improving health, nutrition and hygiene among pregnant and lactating women and children under 6 years.

The program will work closely with the Government of Gujarat (GoG) over a five-year period to strengthen its efforts to address the root causes of malnutrition in specific pockets and identifying an effective model of service delivery and demand creation that could be replicated in other contexts as well. To achieve this goal, the program will work in depth in two high-burden districts of Gujarat – Bhavnagar and Sabarkantha to develop replicable models that could be scaled up to other locations.

Job Summary

The Block Coordinator under the supervision of District Project Manager will be responsible for the technical support activities in their respective assigned blocks. S/he is responsible for providing operational and technical support to block level functionaries of Health (DoH) and Social Welfare Departments (SWD) for Outreach and Nutrition interventions. AWW, ANM, ASHA, CDPO, Lady Supervisor, MOIC, BHM and BCM are key stakeholders to be coordinated in executing responsibilities. Block Coordinator should build capacities of all stake holders at block level to achieve intended health and nutrition outcomes in a timebound manner.

Contract / Key Relationships
The Block Coordinator will report to the members of District/State Unit of Project Vruddhi. S/He will work in close coordination with block level functionaries of Health (DoH) and Social Welfare Departments (SWD) and AWW, ANM, ASHA, CDPO, Lady Supervisor, MOIC, BHM and BCM.

Key Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Block Coordinator will include the following but not be restricted to:

• Behaviour specific messaging using tools/checklist provided by Vruddhi Team as part of COVID response.
• Promotion of Personal hygiene and culturally accepted good practices.
• Coordinate with key stakeholders in the Block to develop and support COVID response activities.
• Targeted messaging for Severe & Acute malnourished children.
• The messages will be disseminated through IEC channels, Mobile Vans/ Slow moving vehicles, through FLWs, IPC sessions held at community level like home visit, mothers meeting etc.
• Promoting hand washing and etiquettes of mask wearing to address reluctance through demonstration in Mangal Divas, VHND sites,
• Observe VHND sessions and Mangal Divas through use of tools and checklist.
• Attending platform meetings at Block and Sector Meetings, ANM Weekly Meetings, Monthly meetings at Block level.
• Compilation of the tools and checklist and share observation reports to District/ State Unit.
• Stay abreast of updated knowledge of all National Public Health programs.
• Prepare reports and ensure timely submission of report to District/ State Unit.
• Provide support in operationalizing and implementing innovations/pilots running in respected blocks.
• Keep in close coordination with Technical Lead in day to day business.
• Travel up to 90% of the time within the Block or outside blocks as and when required.
• Work closely with staff of other development agencies working in the areas of health & nutrition.
• Undertake any other activities as desired by District/State time to time.

Qualification & Experience


• Master’s in social work/Social Science/Rural Management/Rural Development/Public Health/ Hospital & Health Management/MBA
• Bachelor’s degree in social work/Social Science/Rural Management/Rural Development/Public Health/ Hospital & Health Management/BBA.
• At least 2 years of working experience in public health programs at block/district level.


• Familiarity with technical & operational aspect of Maternal/ Child Nutrition interventions.
• Experience of working in RMNCH program activities at block/district level.
• Valid Two-Wheeler Driver’s License.

Skills & Competencies
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities with attention to details.
• Experience of supporting block level implementation and problem solving.
• Experience of working with the national programs at Block/district level, especially RCH, NRHM and RMNCH+A.
• Able to travel extensively within block, district or outside district, if required.
• Willing to live/stay in remote block headquarters of Bhavnagar and Sabarkantha districts of Gujarat.
• Ability to identify problem areas, plan and execute innovative ideas, as well as impart knowledge and skills.
• Ability to mobilize block health and ICDS leadership to strengthen Nutrition programs at block level.
• Willingness and ability to learn and support learning in peers.
• Ability to meet hard timelines while working on different assignments simultaneously.
• A team player following model codes of conduct and behaviour ensuring gender and rights-based approaches at the workplace.
• Ability to read, write and speak local language of Gujarat and Hindi/English.
• Capable of riding motorcycle/scooter, owning one of them and possessing a valid license.
• Owning Mobile Phone and Laptops.
