Room to Read India was established in 2003 and presently have programs in 9 states- Chhattisgarh, Delhi NCR, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Our Literacy Program has been implemented in 15642 government schools, training 25,741 teachers trained in library management and reading activities. Over the same period our Girls’ Education & Gender Equality Program has benefitted over 62,457 girls.

Position Overview: 


Communication Officer at Room to Read will be responsible for creating communications content on behalf of an organization. Co-ordinate development of communication activities for the organization and provide appropriate support both in content development and execution.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Develop, along with the team, a yearly communication strategy and ensure timely implementation.

  • Develop, write, and edit marketing and communications materials, including press releases, blog posts, social media content, media articles or any other external communication platform.

  • Promote communications and marketing materials through appropriate social channels

  • Track analytics and create reports detailing successes and failures of communications campaigns

  • Ensure that all communications and marketing material aligns with brand standards. This would include creating and reviewing the content for Brochures, newsletters, annual reports, posters, or any other internal communication platform.

  • Oversee digital media archives including photos and videos

  • Work with Communication Manager and respond to media inquiries and perform media outreach to achieve brand placement in publications

  • Develop escalation protocols for managing communication crises, should they arise

  • Assist in for brand management across the board

  • Contribute development of compelling communication materials: audio-visuals (documentaries, PSA, Testimonials), PODCAST, animated products, illustrations etc. for targeted audience

  • Assist in creating content for editorials, Op-Eds, media articles etc.

  • Works closely with designer/ printer for visual content alignment for all internal and external communication content.

  • Liaison with Media, PR agencies, printers, designers, vendors etc under the supervision of Communication Manger

  • Create media database and assist in organizational visibility & brand building initiatives.

  • Ideate and create content for specialized campaigns along with other team members

  • Should be able to use Gustav Freytag pyramid for storytelling and ability to develop human interest case stories from the field. 

  • Co-ordinate with Global & state offices and other required sources to obtain relevant information to develop case studies for documentaries, coffee table book, donor reports, photo essays etc

  • Organize, modify, and update existing communication content

  • Assist team to develop and manage yearly calendar of events and ensure adequate online and offline campaigns during those days

  • Assist the supervisor to document an editorial calendar and ensure timely publication

  • Strategize and conceptualize monthly social media content and liaise with internal teams for content development.

  •  Assist team in conceptualizing the social media campaigns targeted at brand awareness, program visibility/fundraising or organizational for flagship events.

  • Develop an effective plan to manage the online reputation (ORM) of RtR. Possess a robust understanding of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and media optimization tools. should do social media analytics including tracking, measuring, and reporting the digital performance on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.

  • Build partnerships with digital news or platforms with high outreach and visibility aimed at increasing the brand outreach of RtR.

  • Support organization in organizing webinars, workshops etc. according to the need of the program departments

  • Maintain and update a database of RtR media coverage

  • Any other work assigned by the Supervisor

Qualifications for Communications Officer

  • 7+ years prior experience in a communications or marketing role

  • MA/PG Diploma in Journalism or MA - English Literature Degree from reputed university/Institution

  • Understand the best practices of main social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

  • Must possess exceptional writing skills and be able to compose engaging and accurate content for all digital and print medium.

  • Strong communicator who works well independently and with a team

  • Superior time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously

  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator is an asset

  • Understanding of communications, public relations, and marketing best practices

  • Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve communication efforts

  • Must be resourceful and take initiative even when given minimal direction

  • Have an overall aesthetic sense of design to go with relevant content.

Abilities/Competencies of Communication officer:

  • Excellent communications skills and the ability to produce high quality content required for Above the line and Below the line promotions

  • Editing & Proof-Reading abilities

  • Ability to spot good stories and develop photo essays

  • Ability to handle Media Campaigns and demonstrated experience of conceptualizing digital campaigns

  • Knowledge of SEO and SEM

  • Strong data analysis and website traffic measurement skills

  • Strong writing and analytical skills are the most essential qualities for this role.

  • A familiarity with the best practices of common social media platforms is also an asset for this position.

  • Basic good visual / designing skills. Has basic knowledge of multimedia such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel draw, Illustrator, In design, Canva, Final-cut- Pro, Adobe premiere, HTML(Basic). Ability to design posters, banners, Jif, social media banners

  • Knowledge of MOJO and PODCAST
