The George Institute India


The George Institute India is a not-for-profit Indian research institute and has been conducting research related activities in India since 2002. The George Institute India’s mission mirrors that of the parent organisation, namely the discovery and implementation of solutions to chronic and disabling health problems through research, policy development, impact and capacity building.


A number of large-scale projects in population, health systems and clinical research, funded by a diverse group of sponsors, both public and private, are conducted in India. TGI has two offices, in Hyderabad and New Delhi, where the research staff and senior management are based. In addition, we have field offices in many locations in both urban and rural locations.


Context and Role


The communications manager will be responsible for the George Institute, India’s internal and external communications and public relations activities, and will drive a range of relationship building and content creation function including stakeholder engagement, media management, events, and promotional material. The incumbent would also support the fundraising activities in India.


The communications manager will develop and maintain effective communications with external stakeholders (Including government, industry, academic, and related health care and other organisations) to enhance and protect the institute’s reputation in India.


The incumbent should have the ability to manage a team and work with external service providers to achieve of the goal of the communications team.


Reporting Relationships


The communications manager reports to the Executive Director, India and is a member of the India Senior Management group. This role is key to building and maintaining the reputation and profile of the George Institute in India.


Duties and Key Responsibilities


The Communications Manager would be expected to have following responsibilities:


Strategic development

  • Develop and implement a communications and marketing strategy and processes which support the Institute’s Strategic Plan and contributes to the achievement of the aims and objectives of the Institute’s goals

  • Support the Head of Fundraising in promoting the Institute to raise philanthropic funds

  • Oversee the identification and costing of agreed communications and marketing needs through the budgeting process

  • Work closely with the Global Communications Team to align strategy with Global Comms strategy and participate in Global Comms meetings

Internal communications

  • Ensure that communications channels are operating effectively throughout the organisation, such that the Institute’s mission, values, strategies and achievements are understood by all staff at all times

  • With Head of HR, oversee the conduct of regular Townhalls

  • Provide regular updates on the Institute’s strategy and annual goals, working closely with the Executive Director

  • Contribute to local content to global publications such as the Annual Report, quarterly newsletter, Global intranet and Global website

  • Develop and execute an employee engagement program that includes regular emails and face to face update from the Executive Director with the particular emphasis on clearly communicating the key strategic priorities, performance, successes and milestones, areas of opportunity and employee reward and recognition

External communications

  • Oversee the Institute’s external communications strategy, ensuring that the research and impact activities of the Institute are widely promoted

  • Guide the digital media strategy and activity of the Institute including the website and social media

  • Responsible for the production of the Institute’s annual report and communications writing

  • Be the central contact person for media -related activities and communicate promptly and effectively to request for response /comment, research, quotes, photos, interviews and information from media contacts

  • Responsible for the development of other relevant communications materials – both print and electronic - including newsletters, brochures and videos

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and senior management to develop story concepts and write compelling media releases, public service announcements, and media advisories to place in local, regional and national news media.

  • With the team, collect, compile and maintain media contacts list/ database, and work with them to manage George Institute’s media reports including TV, radio, newspaper, magazines and internet.

  • Organise media conferences, send media kits, media releases and pitch stories to appropriate media outlets

  • Provide assistance to Institute staff in writing speeches, preparing letters and drafting articles for distribution to key stakeholders.

  • Monitor and measure communications performance

Brand development and marketing

  • Responsible for managing a positive brand image and the integrity of the Institute

  • Work with the Head of Fundraising and as part of Senior Management Group to develop a brand and campaign(s) to raise awareness of the Institute to High Profile Individuals and local and global Foundations and Trusts

  • Develop and implement activities that increase the profile of the Institute

As a senior team member of TGI India

  • Participate in team meetings and activities, including the Senior Management Group 

  • Advise the management on the public relations implications of Institute policies, practices and actions; review proposed changes for their probable effect on public opinion, and recommend action to improve public relations

As a Team Member

  • Participate in team meetings and activities relating to institute’s strategic goals and priorities and own work area.

  • Participate in special projects to improve processes, tools, systems and organisation.

  • Take responsibility for personal learning and development and for setting achievable and meaningful work objectives and managing personal targets, meeting obligations of the Institute’s Performance Management and Development Policy.

  • Demonstrate commitment to Institute’s values, including performing to an exceptionally high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

As a Team Manager

  • Ensure direct reports understand and comply with the Institute’s Policies and procedures, standard operating practices, ethical practice (with respect to research) and the legislative environment.

  • Be responsible for managing performance of direct reports, including the completion of plans and agreeing on work and personal objectives and reviewing such plans and objectives, in accordance with the Institute’s Performance Management and Development Policy.

  • Act as a role model and ensure the team’s commitment to the Institute’s values, ensuring direct reports perform to a high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

Work, Health and Safety

  • Comply with the Institute’s Work Health and Safety Policy and related procedures, and similar policies which apply when visiting the premises of affiliates and collaborating sites.

  • Promote and contribute to a safe, secure environment for staff and visitors.

  • Ensure direct reports understand and comply with safe work practice and procedures.

  • Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Master’s degree in a related field is required 

  • Over 10 years of experience in the field of public relation, media relations, journalism or marketing communications

  • Experience in managing and providing functional direction to the team.

  • Experience in health/ medical/ academic/ NGO environment would be an advantage

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills (verbal- English and Hindi and written- English)

  • Strong local media contacts

  • Understanding social media channels and communication/ content style required

  • Ability to effectively work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently, prioritising and managing workflow

  • Resolves problems for the Institute using analysis of organizational objectives and strategic direction.

  • Determines the resources needed for delivering on area of responsibility. Spends time planning and forecasting for future communication needs

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and strong attention to detail.

  • Strong MS Office skills with the ability / experience in publishing content on websites

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a multicultural environment
