Job Description

The Director, 30x30 Biodiversity Initiative provides strategic coordination, collaboration and leadership, expertise and support across a wide variety of functions or services, working with multiple teams that include public policy and government relations, communications, conservation planning, science, conservation implementation, and public and private funding mobilization. The Director will seek to integrate and elevate organizational objectives across those work streams, ensuring that we achieve representative and climate resilient protections that are effectively managed, durable, and inclusive and equitable, in each jurisdiction. They may serve as a principal contact to other conservation organizations, foundations, and/or strategic partners and they will also play a leading role in donor cultivation and securing the resources necessary for success. They may engage local community and key influential support for local, division, and global conservation efforts, negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, major institutions, and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities, and develop and implement cutting edge conservation strategies in a high-profile geography and major philanthropic market.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides overall project direction and coordination, working with Conservancy workstream leads and teams (Science, Communications, Policy and Government Relations, Public and Private Resource Mobilization, Regional and Country Conservation Implementation teams).

  • Responsible for building out initiative vision, objectives, project management tools (e.g., team org chart, budget, etc.) and strategic work plans with team members in support of Conservancy priorities.

  • Builds organizational awareness for the initiative and works to build a cohesive approach and understanding across the organization.

  • Holds a global scope with a focus on providing strategic leadership and support in implementation countries, priority states, and across functional teams.

  • Develops innovative methods, analysis, tools and frameworks to address initiative needs, including measures to determine and track success.

  • Builds and supports capacity in the field or within a program, in line with TNC’s protection strategies and goals.

  • Responsible for collaborating with teams to raise $10M+ from public and private funds in line with the overall initiative and vision.

  • Identifies and supports external engagements and opportunities to elevate initiative conservation objectives with partners and key stakeholders.

  • Communicates the vision and progress toward the 2030 Goal to internal and external audiences authentically and passionately.

  • Prepares initiative materials, proposals, and presentations.

  • Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance for the initiative while controlling costs and administering budgets.

  • Facilitates trainings, workshops, and meetings.

  • Makes independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience and context.

  • May supervise staff directly and will oversee a working team across departments where this is no direct authority.

  • When approved and in compliance with organizational COVID-19 health and safety protocols this position may require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally. May require evening and weekend hours.

Education Qualification/ Required Skills & Experience

  • BA/BS degree and 12 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.

  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance across multiple geographies, including managing finances, supervising multidisciplinary professionals and coordinating the work of partners while meeting deadlines.  

  • Experience working with current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and geographic regions.

  • Senior level management and leadership experience.

  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.   

  • Experience networking with high level conservation contacts (such as government officials, NGO leaders, etc.)

  • Experience conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives.

  • Experience negotiating.

  • Ability to travel up to 40% time both domestically and internationally (when approved due to Covid precautions), and to work occasional weekends and evenings.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and 12-15 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

  • Extensive project management experience, including PMI Certification is a plus.

  • Experience developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.

  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

  • Experience in protection efforts in both the United States and Globally.

  • Experience at the intersection of several of the following: Policy, Science, Communications, Conservation Implementation, Private Fundraising, and Public Resource Mobilization.

  • Experience working with current trends and practices related to protection strategies, conservation finance, and partnership with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities.

  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.

  • Experience working with methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives.

  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.

  • Delivering practical, adaptable products and services to customers.

  • Politically savvy and knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental affairs.

  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

  • Demonstrated leadership and visionary qualities and ability to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
