Basic Healthcare Services

Executive, Community engagement

Basic Health Services (BHS) is a not-for-profit organization which provides a responsive, empathetic primary health ‘circle of care’, that is rooted in the community. Registered in Udaipur (southern Rajasthan), in 2012, it is driven by the vision of a healthcare ecosystem where the most vulnerable communities can actively access healthcare with dignity.

BHS approaches its mission through a mix of approaches: service delivery, community empowerment, evidence-based advocacy, private and public partnerships, and research.

BHS directly serves a population of 125,000 in Udaipur and Dungarpur districts, of which 90% is tribal and 70% households have at least one labour-migrant. BHS has been working through a network of (a) AMRIT Clinics; not-for-profit primary healthcare clinics; (b) day-care and nutrition centres (Phulwaris); and (c) a Primary Health Centre in partnership with government of Rajasthan, to not only address the issues of healthcare access and quality, but also to recognise and influence conditions of poverty and indebtedness.

We are hopeful to add a team member to strengthen our community-based interventions. This role is even more important in the middle of the pandemic, when we see COVID spreading into deep rural areas on one hand, and are faced with a breakage of community’s trust in the systems, on the other. This is a programmatic role, requiring a hands-on experience of working in community-based health initiatives for marginalized populations; skills in engaging with, and training community volunteers; and ability to collate, analyse and document the learning from the ground.
