Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (DWB) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters and exclusion from healthcare.

We have been present in India since 1999 providing free-of-charge essential healthcare to people in remote areas, and specialist care for people affected by HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, hepatitis C, antibiotic resistance, tuberculosis, kala azar and sexual and gender-based violence. MSF was awarded the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development in 1996 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.

COVID-19 emergency intervention

Today we are facing a new global challenge. Doctors Without Borders teams are racing to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic in over 70 countries, including opening new projects in areas that are becoming pandemic hotspots. In India, Maharashtra has more COVID cases in the country. The rising number of confirmed cases especially in the outside Mumbai requires more focused approaches and interventions.


Doctors Without Borders India(DWBI) has initiated an assessment around mid-May in the State of Maharashtra for Covid-19 pandemic during the second wave as the State had highest number of infection in the country. An explo team made an assessment in several places including Palghar district, Maharashtra which is a newly founded district in 2014. Palghar district has tribal population and varali paintings are very popular showing tribal heritage. Based on the outcome from the assessment, DWBI proposed to support Jawahar and Dahanu Dedicated Covid Health Centre (DCHC) and 4 Primary Health Centres under Jawahar taluk for mild and moderate Covid patients in screening and triage among the beneficiaries of the regular health programs and strengthen community prevention/shielding through health promotion packages for high risk population.

This is an intervention under Emergency support for short term with the approval of the district administration and health authorities under Palghar district.

Main purpose of the role

Contributing to the provision of quality intercultural mediation services in the Palghar project (by DWBI and local actors) by supervising a team of intercultural mediators according to DWBI values, standards and procedures in order to foster the removal of linguistic and cultural barriers and improve the quality of and access to quality health care and socio/legal services.

Main accountabilities

• Actively supporting the intercultural mediators (ICM) team and ensuring the day-to-day implementation of intercultural mediation activities at project level, including (but not limited to) managing dynamics in the trialogue communication between mediator, patient and care provider; preventing and managing possible misunderstandings, communication blockages and tension; interpreting; PFA; information and orientation (e.g. sociolegal); collecting testimonies and providing emotional support;
• Supervising the intercultural mediators in terms of planning and organizing, data collection and reporting.
• Ensuring that DWBI procedures and protocols are being followed to guarantee the operational quality of the project;
• Planning and supervising the HR processes (recruitment, performance evaluation, tasks definition and internal and external communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the size and the required level of training of the team.
• Implementing relevant trainings for the intercultural mediators in collaboration with the relevant referent/activity managers (PMR, MHAM,HAO,HP) to ensure the required level of knowledge in the team;
• Ensuring proper collaboration, communication and information sharing between the intercultural mediators and the different activities/departments.
• Performing intercultural mediation activities when required.

Monthly Gross Salary: INR 35,001.00 and

Qualifications: Desirable degree in social sciences, social communication or teaching; Education in interpretation or intercultural mediation is an asset.

Language: Marathi and/or Tribal Language.

Experience: Desirable experience with other NGOs.

As this recruitment is for a specific emergency response on COVID-19, it is important that staff only apply for this position if they do not have one of the major risk factors for COVID namely existing cardiac complications, diabetes, hypertension, pregnancy or age > 55 years.

Duration: Until 31st Aug 2021 (Renewable depending upon project needs)
