Position: Lay Counsellor Educator (3 positions)


Job Locations: Patna (1), Arah (1) and Saran (1) in Bihar


Project: Patna Advance HIV  


Duration: Till 31st December 2021  


Start Date: ASAP

We offer:

  • Salary Gross (INR): 24,880/- per month (non-negotiable).

 Perform basic counseling and/or educational activities to patients, families, communities, following MSF protocols   and procedures, in order to improve the health condition of the patient.




Hierarchically and functionally accountable to the IEC Officer - Field.



  • Actively promote the availability of MSF services.

  • Carry out, individually or in group, basic counselling and/or educational sessions, to patients, their families, hospital staff and/or the community.

  • Refer patients when necessary to other specialists or external actors in order to provide the best available support. 

  • Collect and report specific information related to the target group.

  • Keep files and statistics updated about the counselling and/or educational activities. 

  • Give testimonies to patients and in the community on own experiences as a patient.



Overall Objectives of the Job:

  • To support MSF in rolling out the Community engagement strategy.

  • To ensure community awareness about the specific disease, symptoms, transmission, prevention and MSF treatment programme.

  • To act as the representative of MSF-OCA in the promotion of health education according to the MSF Charter and mandate.

  • To assist in the assessment of humanitarian needs and emergency interventions arising in the region and if needed, showing flexibility, adaptability and commitment.

  • Contribute to the reduction of the HIV associated stigma in the community. 

  • To strengthen referral system from PHC´s.

  • To follow-up the HIV patients through home visits & phone.

  • To trace the Advanced HIV patients from selected project districts.

  • To coordinate and collaborate with ASHA workers on HIV, PKDL and Hygiene.

  • To respect MSF internal regulations , the contract and the present job description.

Specific skills:

  • Must be from the same district, applying for.

  • Fluency in local language(s), spoken & written. 

  • Social skills to connect with the community effectively.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Punctual and ability to act with accountability.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload & taking initiative when appropriate.

  • Zero tolerance towards prejudices against PLHIV.

  • Willingness and ability to live and work in a rural setting.

  • Must have a two-wheeler with a valid license. 

  • Understanding of MS Office and spoken English will be an asset.


  • Essential - Minimum 10+2 passed.

  • Desirable - Graduate in any discipline preferably social science.


  • 3-5 years’ experience in the field of social work is an asset.

  • 3-5 experience in community outreach in rural setting. 

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in the field of HIV/AIDS.
