2.             Context


WaterAid is a not-for-profit organisation, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere. Since 1986, WaterAid India has successfully implemented water, sanitation and hygiene projects to transform the lives of the poor and the most marginalised. In India, WaterAid is present across 12 States. In 2020-21, WaterAid India has reached over 3,59,751 people providing access to clean water; 17,970 with decent toilets and providing over 98,217 people with good hygiene education.



3.             Purpose


To generate and organise media & press coverage for WaterAid India, and to contribute to the development and implementation of the media and communications strategy for the organisation and the brand.


Job Description: WaterAid India is looking for a highly motivated, skilled & dedicated individual to support WaterAid India’s growing aspirations around increasing its presence to external stakeholders. As one of the premier WASH sector organisations, we are constantly striving towards creating more opportunities for dialogue and conversation to make access to clean, drinking water and better hygiene a reality for everyone, everywhere. With the pandemic and the impact of COVID 19, you are expected to think on your feet and be agile in response to the constantly evolving situation.


The ideal candidate is someone who has 5-6 years of relevant job experience. Rich experience of working in the social sector, PR and Media sector or having a former background / training as journalist would be an added advantage for this position. As a key member of WaterAid India’s Media & Comms teams you are expected to spearhead, strategise, consult and work with teams across regions, internally, to develop result-oriented media strategies that will position the organisation and its wok as a thought-leader in the space of WASH-related matters.


You are expected to drive and nurture engagements with media professionals from mainstream English and vernacular media outlets and communicate effectively on the key issues facing the organisation. Ability to connect with unconventional media channels including online social influencers, local community level influencers would be an added advantage. Your ability to understand and manage Financials, & compliance will be an asset.


4.             Key Responsibilities


General activities:

  • Identify relevant and meaningful themes, developments,  in India and abroad regarding WaterAid’s work and translate them into media activities, along with the organisation’s achievements, or point of view

  • Coordinate media activities with other members of WaterAid globally

  • On a daily basis, monitor major India and international news media in order to stay abreast of local and global events directly relevant and tangential to WaterAid’s work and to maintain knowledge of reporter and photographer beats and movements

Media engagement and content creator

  • Serve as frontline media contact; respond to media-related inquiries and connect media persons with relevant WaterAid spokespeople in a timely and comprehensive manner

  • Responsible for pro-actively pitching WaterAid issues and advocacy concerns to India-based media

  • Develop ideas, opportunities, and draft feature articles, interviews, presentations, op-eds, and other communications pieces — in conjunction and collaboration with the Media & Communications Manager — to promote awareness of the programmatic and advocacy work of WaterAid

  • Edit, write, and distribute press releases and other communications materials to media representatives and others who may be interested in learning about or covering WaterAid’s activities or messages

  • Organise press conferences and facilitate press visits (virtually as well as face to face) in conjunction and collaboration with the Media & Communications Manager

  • Carry out media analyses in order to evaluate impact and outreach

  • Provide/advise on editorial content and design for the e-newsletter and the WaterAid website/microsites and other publications

Media database and engagement with media

  • Map, update, and maintain media database

  • Develop and maintain contacts and relationships with domestic and foreign media representatives in India to create opportunities to keep WaterAid India in front of the public and key constituencies

  • Monitor relevant media coverage on issues affecting WaterAid and its stakeholders and provide regular media reports, including analysis

Media support to public & LIVE online events

  • Plan and implement media work and outreach to raise visibility of campaigns and events

  • Advise and brief staff and senior management on media issues, including in emergencies

  • Assist and coach WaterAid staff for media presentation and preparation of articles for publication

Quality control and maintenance

  • Safeguard that all media messages and activities are in line with WaterAid’s media and communication policies and safeguard style/identity and the quality of the content

  • Maintain up-to-date representation material for media contacts

Other responsibilities

  • Participate in planning and implementation of WaterAid’s communications strategies, policies and procedures

  • Participate in formulating cohesive messages and media strategies with other WaterAid offices globally via routine contact

  • Visit WaterAid’s programme areas in support of communications objectives

5.             Eligibilities and requirements



  • Graduate or postgraduate in Journalism/Mass Communication; Marketing & PR; or equivalent field from reputed institutes across India or globally


  • Between 5 to 6 years of relevant work experience in similar organisational/functional context

Other specifications

  • Excellent analytical and writing skills (Hindi and English); multimedia skills would be an asset

  • Excellent communication and (re)presentation skills, outgoing personality

  • Ability to manage Finances, Billing and do basic budgeting for role specific functions

  • Willing and able to be work on irregular days and hours

  • Able to work under high pressure and with deadlines

  • Creative, pro-active, and flexible 

  • Ability to coach and train others

  • Able to organise & prioritise workload independently

  • Interest and knowledge of humanitarian issues in India

  • Willingness to travel within India

  • Ability to work from home, when required.

  • High level of integrity

  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, especially MS Word and MS Excel

  • Demonstrable interest in and understanding of public health and WASH issues

  • Experience of producing written materials on WASH issues for publication
