Multiple Position at Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS)


About SPS: Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS) is headquartered in a drought-prone, tribal area of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of India's largest non-government initiatives for water, livelihoods and women’s empowerment. SPS believes that to address India’s long-standing problems, we must graduate to an alternative development model based on the principles of equity, sustainability and people’s empowerment. SPS tries to address the crisis of Indian agriculture by evolving an alternative low-risk and low-cost approach, reducing dependence on chemical inputs. Samaj Pragati Sahayog has been engaged in various community development initiatives including water conservation, efficient use of water, sustainable livelihoods, health & nutrition and promotion of community-based institutions for almost three decades. We concentrate all our direct interventions in about 574 villages and towns in 8 blocks of 3 districts (Dewas, Khargone, and Amravati) in the States of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, working in direct contact with about 65000 families.  To facilitate mutual learning from our work and that of our partners, we set up the Baba Amte Centre for People’s Empowerment in 1998 in tribal village Neemkheda, where regular training programmes on various themes take place


SPS invites applications from suitable candidates for the following multiple positions in various programmes of the organisation.


Self Help Groups (SHGs) - Livelihood : form the bedrock of all of SPS’ work. Most of the members of these SHGs belong to the marginalised – poor, Adivasi, Dalits, landless and displaced people. These disadvantaged women learn to run their own series of nested institutions – SHGs, Cluster Development Associations (of 15-20 SHGs) and Federations (of around 200 SHGs). The SHG and livelihood programmes complement each other,and their simultaneous implementation is the key to poverty alleviation. Incomes raised through livelihood initiatives need to be saved. It is they who ensure that these savings are, in turn, diligently reinvested in livelihood options that raise incomes, and health and education of the family, setting up a vi The Programme Officer of the SHG-Livelihoods Programme is expected to:

  1. Support and assist in the Self-Help Group led livelihood interventions of the organization;

  2. Facilitate integration of all other livelihood initiatives of SPS, such as agriculture, livestock, commodity aggregation, watershed development, water governance, with SHGs

  3. Actively interact and coordinate with the village community, local banks, the Panchati Raj Institutions (PRIs), government agencies etc.

  4. Conduct trainings for other NGOs, PRI members, government officials, bankers and

  5. members of SHGs;

  6. Assist in the development of training material to be used in the empowerment programmes of the Baba Amte Centre for Peoples Empowerment (BACPE), Village Neemkheda.

  7. Conduct evaluations, appraisals and providing support to the work of NGOs engaged in

  8. SHG formation; and

  9. Perform any other duty towards the furtherance of the objectives of Samaj Pragati Sahayog.

Suitable Agriculture:Candidates with Post-graduate degree in Agriculture or Horticulture with a work experience of five to six years in the field are preferred. Preference is given to women candidates.


The roles and responsibilities of selected professionals include the following:

  1. Implement the Non-Pesticide Management (NPM) Agriculture Programme of SPS at the field and build capacities of farming communities and Community Resource Persons (CRPs)

  2. Develop systems of Demand-side Management of water use in agriculture and improvement of water use efficiency

  3. Assist in Soil Health Management initiatives of SPS for improving soil quality

  4. Support the Commodity Aggregation Programme and strengthen the Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) promoted by SPS.

  5. Work towards building local institutions of farmers and institutional strengthening

  6. Promote the Women’s Empowerments Programme of SPS

  7. Engage and coordinate with the village community, the PRIs, government agencies for taking forward key policy issues in agriculture

  8. Develop training curriculum and materials for the empowerment programmes of the Baba Amte Center for People’s Empowerment (BACPE).

  9. Perform any other duty towards the furtherance of the objectives of SPS.

Livestock: Candidate with Post-graduation in Agriculture or Development Studies, MBA in Rural Management, is desirable. Candidates should have good writing skills in Hindi and English. Candidates with experiences of working with community in two years will be preferred. Women candidates will be given preference.


The roles and responsibilities of selected professionals include the following:

  1. Assist in implementing the Livestock Programme of SPS;

  2. Actively contribute to implementing Livelihood through livestock development for women SHG Member.

  3. Establish ways of improving the participation of Livestock producer in markets so that they get a fair deal in these markets;  

  4. Work closely with women farmers and help build strong and vibrant people’s institutions, led by women;

  5. Establish coordination between different livelihood programmes like SHG, watershed development NPM agriculture, etc.

  6. Establish network with various Research institutions, Veterinary Hospital, Government Veterinary collage, Govt line department, NABARD and nationalised banks.

  7. Engage with rural communities and co-ordinate work of the village community, the PRIs and government agencies; 

  8. Assist in the development of training material to be used in the empowerment programme of the Baba Amte Center for People’s Empowerment.

Watershed Professionals: We are looking for Watershed Professionals with a minimum of Two years of experience for our watershed development programme. The chosen person will handle interventions that focus on participatory ground water management, NRM, PIM, use efficiency & planning of water resources in collaboration with line departments of the Government. They should develop active interaction with village communities, people’s institutions and Panchayat Raj Institutions (PRI) in order to motivate them to become partners in the development activities of our organisation. An ideal professional will be amicable, hard-working & adaptable to field conditions, think creatively while solving technical problems and be able to handle a team of professionals with diverse skills & qualifications. A Civil Engineering degree/diploma is desirable. M.Sc in Geology & Hydro-geology, B.Tech/M.Tech in Agriculture Engineering & Graduates of Soil & Water Conservation are also welcome to apply.


Documentation and Research Officer:  The role of the DRO is to ensure rigorous documentation of this exciting range of activities, as also their impact, and present them in an accessible and attractive form. The documentation includes the countless untold stories of social transformation unfolding in the lives of local communities. Thus, the DRO comes faces to face with all diverse elements of SPS work through extensive travel in the field. Which has to then be transformed into documents used by SPS for various purposes. The DRO needs to be familiar with both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and have a good command over both written and spoken English and Hindi.


Accounts and Admin Officer: Candidate with Post-graduation in Mcom or CA final year with two years experience is desirable We are seeking passionate grassroots professionals who can commit to work in these programmes for a minimum of two years.
