Working with media and communication to help reduce poverty and support people in understanding their rights, our aim is to inform, connect and inspire people around the world. BBC Media Action reaches some 100 million people across Asia, Africa and the Middle East and Europe, through both legacy and new media platforms - television, radio, print, outdoor, outreach, and of course, digital – both online and mobile. Our projects and programmes save lives, protect livelihoods, counter misinformation, challenge prejudice and build democracy. Using a human centred design approach, BBC Media Action’s work is rooted in evidence, powered by insights, and leverages impact-tested, scalable, big ideas to create social and behaviour change.


In India, over the past two decades, BBC Media Action has delivered impact in health (HIV prevention, tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment, reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and child health), sanitation, gender equity, climate change and the prevention of bonded labour.


About the Project:


Since late 2019, BBC Media Action has been working on research and learning project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to deepen, nuance and pressure test assumptions underpinning the Foundation’s Digital Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) strategy in order to identify and define execution pathways. The Gates Foundation has identified Women’s Empowerment Collectives (WEC) as a key pillar of its WEE strategy. WECs in India, face a number of constraints and digital technology could support WECs in overcoming many of these challenges.


Job Purpose:


The successful candidate will be working with a cross organizational, multidisciplinary project team to roll out a series of digital Proofs of Concept with BBC Media Action’s partners and women’s empowerment collectives in Madhya Pradesh and potentially other states.


They will be responsible for the overall implementation and roll out of the project in Madhya Pradesh. This will include managing relationships with local partners, supporting research activities and conducting training activities within WECs.


The successful candidate will have robust experience of working in rural and peri-urban field locations. The candidate will have strong field implementation and project management skills and be a strategic thinker. Experience of working with women’s empowerment collectives, including Self Help Groups (SHGs) and/or cooperatives is essential.


The role requires an organised and structured person, a quick thinker with the ability to multi-task and problem-solve, with excellent time management skills. The post holder will need to be a self-starter with the ability to juggle priorities and meet deadlines. They will need strong verbal and written communications skills in English and Hindi. Experience of working with women collectives and on gender issues is essential. Experience of digital technologies, human-centred design, and social sector research is desirable.


Location/Reporting and Contract duration


The post is based in Indore with frequent travel within Madhya Pradesh, including but potentially not limited to Maheshwar, Ujjain and Indore.


The successful candidate will be required to work for a maximum of up to 16 days per month within this contract period. They will report to Associate Project Director and will work closely with staff in the Digital WEE team and other consultants.


They may accept other consultancies provided there is no conflict of interest with the work at BBC Media Action during the consultancy period.


The duration of this contract and the number of working days can be extendable based on mutually agreed terms.


Main Duties and Responsibilities:


Project management

  • Manage all field implementation activities in Madhya Pradesh in consultation with BBC Media Action staff and the local NGO partner. This will include but not be limited to the following activities:

  1. Work with the local partner to recruit participants from WECs and from the community for these proofs of concepts

  2. Manage the logistics and operations for these proofs of concept in collaboration with the local partner

  3. Conduct training with recruited participants and other members in the WECs on digital tools and platforms (IVR and WhatsApp chatbot)

  4. Monitor and facilitate use of these job-aids by women in WECs

  • Monitor and facilitate other additional group activities with WEC members

  • Ensuring high quality and timely delivery of field implementation activities in Madhya Pradesh, in line with the proposed strategy and targets, throughout the life of the project.

Stakeholder management

  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with the local partner organization, women’s empowerment collectives (SHGs) and other stakeholders – including, potentially, government officials in Madhya Pradesh to ensure effective implementation of the project.

  • Ensuring a timely roll-out of activities in the field by regularly coordinating with the local partner on workplans, timelines, resourcing, logistics and other operational activities.

  • Conduct regular reviews, check-ins and ensure quality implementation of the project.

  • Provide regular feedback on status checks to BBC Media Action.

Research management

  • Support BBC Media Action’s research team in conducting research studies with WECs and the community, including smart recruitment of respondents.

Training and monitoring

  • Conduct training of a limited number of women in WECs on digital job aids created by BBC Media Action (IVR and WhatsApp chatbot) in collaboration with the local partner.

  • Facilitate and monitor the use of the job aids by trained women in WECs in collaboration with the local partner.


  • Write frequent, regular project reports as per the project team’s requirements. This will include anecdotal stories, audio/visual reports with consent and regular quality checks.

External and internal communication

  • Playing a representational role, both for the project and the organisation, internally and externally, with stakeholders on the ground in Madhya Pradesh and potentially other states.

  • Supporting the documentation and dissemination of learnings and insights from the project.


  • Ensure that relevant safeguarding due diligence is conducted with any local partner organisations that may be working with vulnerable adults or children as part of the project. Where any risks are identified, ensure that projects are designed to mitigate these risks.

  • Report any Safeguarding concerns immediately, either to the Country Director, or using the Whistleblowing Policy

  • Comply with and immediately raise issues identified related to data protection and information security requirements.

Skills, knowledge and experience required:

  • Robust field implementation experience, including of supporting research and conducting training, as well as managing in-field operations.

  • Proven ability to collaborate closely and work with multi-disciplinary teams and multi-level stakeholders and partners.

  • Demonstrated skills in planning and executing field activities according to agreed timelines.

  • Experience working with women’s empowerment collectives and self-help group federations or similar collectives.

  • Strong understanding of digital technologies in the context of digital development.

  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation, planning and organisation, and strategic thinking.

  • Excellent oral and written English and Hindi.

  • Ability to work on own initiative and organise time effectively within a range of often conflicting deadlines. 

  • Proven ability to manage a complex and demanding workload.

  • Experience of social and behaviour change communications/communications for development is desirable.

  • Experience of human-centred design approaches and design research is desirable.
