The George Institute India


The George Institute, a wholly owned legal not-for-profit Indian research institute, has been conducting research related activities in India since 2002. The George Institute India’s mission mirrors that of the parent organization, namely the discovery and implementation of solutions to chronic and disabling health problems through research, policy development and capacity building.


A number of large-scale projects in population, health systems and clinical research, funded by a diverse group of sponsors, both public and private, are conducted in India. The George Institute India comprises two distinct operating groups: Research and Development, and Infrastructure and Resources. It has two separate offices - in Hyderabad and New Delhi, where the research staff and senior management are based.


Context and Role


The person will be part of a project called ARTEMIS which is a cluster randomized controlled trial on use of technology enabled delivery of mental health care by primary healthcare workers for depression, suicide and stress among adolescents in urban slum communities in two cities of India. The project will be conducted across 2 cities – Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and New Delhi in Delhi.  At each site it will cover about 30 slum communities.


The project supervisor will be based in the Vijayawada field office.


The role of the project supervisor will be to oversee all the field activities held in the Vijayawada intervention sites.


This position requires the project supervisor to work 6 days a week.


Reporting Relationships


This position reports to Research Fellow based in Hyderabad.


This position will be required to lead and manage the junior project supervisor and a team of field staff in the project locations in Vijayawada.


Duties and Key Responsibilities


The project supervisor would be expected to oversee and lead the following:

  • Listing households and identify adolescents who regularly reside in the slums

  • Liaising with community leaders and other community stakeholders for vendor contracts, permissions, etc, as per needs for delivering the project on the field in Vijayawada under the supervision of the research team and their guidance

  • Overseeing and managing junior project supervisor and field staff as per need and assist in identifying and recruiting them to identify possible risks/issues in the community that might need resolving

  • Undertaking any other task assigned by the manager, the senior research fellow and PI related to this project

  • Liaising with colleagues in the project as well as those in other projects as per need

As a Team Member:

  • Contribute actively and in a constructive manner to the smooth conduct of the ARTEMIS Project

  • Be responsible in communicating the need and purpose of the research to all field staff in a coherent manner

  • Participate in team meetings and activities relating to the project and own work area;

  • Take responsibility for personal learning and development and for setting achievable and meaningful work objectives and managing personal targets, meeting obligations of the Institute’s Performance Management and Development Policy;

  • Demonstrate commitment to GI’s values, including performing to an exceptionally high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

As a Team Manager:

  • Ensure direct reports understand and comply with GI’s Policies and procedures, standard operating practices, ethical practice (with respect to research) and the legislative environment.

  • Be responsible for managing performance of direct reports, including the completion of plans and agreeing on work and personal objectives and reviewing such plans and objectives, in accordance with GI’s Performance Management and Development Policy.

  • Act as a role model and ensure the team’s commitment to GI’s values, ensuring direct reports perform to a high ethical standard and focus on integrity, collaboration and teamwork in all efforts.

Work, Health and Safety

  • Comply with GI’s Work Health and Safety Policy and related procedures, and similar policies which apply when visiting the premises of affiliates and collaborating sites.

  • Promote and contribute to a safe, secure environment for staff and visitors.

  • Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Graduate in science, social science, management, social work, public health.

  • 3 years work experience from a recognized institution.

  • Working knowledge of Hindi and English (reading, writing, communication)

  • Experience of working in urban slums/ working with adolescents

Desireable criteria:

  • Masters degree in science, social science, management, social work, public health

  • Good communication skills with the community especially adolescents and their parents

Skills required:

  • Working knowledge of computers required especially email/ outlook, Microsoft office suite etc.

  • Strong organizational, planning, negotiating, and problem solving skills.

  • Sound knowledge of project operations

  • Ability to assess the pros and cons, risks and benefits in different situations and ability to refer to supervisor when the problem is outside the scope of understanding

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, team-work/leadership skills, with ability to collaborate in teams and work with a wide range of varying stakeholders.

  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and to be adaptable to changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments.

  • Strong focus on producing the highest quality of work and understanding the importance of data quality and accuracy in health research.

  • Some understanding of confidentiality and privacy laws and guidelines relevant to medical research.

  • Well organised and efficient, with the capacity to work under pressure and willingness to take on challenges of unfamiliar and new tasks, alongside routine daily work.
