Background

John Snow India Private Limited (JSIPL) is a subsidiary of John Snow, Inc. JSI's mission is to improve the health of underserved people and communities and to provide a place where people of passion and commitment can pursue this cause. For 35 years, Boston-based JSI and its affiliates have provided high-quality technical and managerial assistance to public health programs worldwide. JSI has implemented projects in 106 countries, and currently operates from eight U.S. and 81 international offices, with more than 500 U.S.-based professionals and 1,600 host country staff. In India, JSIPL implements and manages several public health projects in the areas of maternal, child and newborn health; supply chain logistics; immunization; and HIV.

Project Overview

JSI has been commissioned to provide technical assistance to MoHFW for COVID-19 vaccine introduction and roll-out in India. JSI will provide technical support to the Immunization Division of the MoHFW (COVID-19 Vaccine Support Cell) and collaborate with immunization partners to help accelerate the implementation and scaling up of the COVID-19 vaccine introduction activities through the Immunization Technical Support Unit (ITSU).

Adverse events following COVID 19 vaccination are being captured by the existing passive surveillance system. There are some adverse events which could potentially arise in COVID 19 vaccines manufactured on new or rarely used platforms. These events are called Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESIs). A sentinel surveillance system is being established to identify and capture AESIs in both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Findings from the surveillance system will contribute to vaccine safety profiles of COVID19 vaccines and inform emerging vaccine safety issues for taking appropriate action.
