The successful candidate will be based in India at the office of Program ACCELERATE, and provide support to a large USAID- funded HIV/AIDS program aimed at improving health outcomes among higher-risk populations in India. ACCELERATE delivers services and provides technical assistance to National HIV/AIDS programs in India for comprehensive HIV prevention and treatment targeting key populations (men who have sex with men, female sex workers, transgender individuals, and people who inject drugs). ACCELERATE is led by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in partnership with The Fenway Institute, YR Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education (YRG CARE) and Blue Lotus Advisory.



ACCELERATE is seeking a technical expert with expertise with qualitative data collection in India. The position will report to the Assessment Coordinator and work closely with the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team to prepare for, coordinate, and conduct interviews and/or focus groups with key stakeholders of ACCELERATE activities across India. The technical expert will be responsible for conducting interviews, and transcribing and cleaning completed interviews, including translation to English. We are looking for someone who has experience conducting qualitative data collection with a range of different stakeholders, with a preference for experience in the field of public health, particularly in HIV/AIDS, and with higher-risk population groups including sex workers, men who have sex with men, transgender populations, or people who inject drugs in India. The ideal candidate is trained in qualitative methods, has experience conducting interviews, is highly organized, detail-oriented, and has experience collaborating with communities of interest.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and carry out community sensitization activities

  • Participate in onboarding and data collection training, including pilot testing, to tailor data collection tools

  • Coordinate logistics for participant recruitment, conduct eligibility screenings and informed consent

  • Prepare for and conduct pretesting and qualitative interviews through remote platforms as well as in-person

  • Take notes during qualitative interviews conducted by other staff members

  • Collect and manage data files as per protocol

  • Transcribe and clean interviews into English in a timely manner

  • Engage with analysis team to inform coding or other analysis process

  • Regularly communicate and coordinate with the M&E team to ensure data collection progresses smoothly, following protocol

  • Other duties as assigned

General Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years work experience conducting qualitative assessments specifically on public health research or program evaluation projects

  • Graduation degree (preferable, not essential) or Diploma in relevant field

  • Training in qualitative methods

  • Experience conducting interviews and focus groups, note-taking, transcribing interviews, and analyzing qualitative data

  • Experience working in the public health sector in India (HIV/AIDS experience preferred, and/or programs with higher risk populations such as men who have sex with men, transgender women, sex workers, or people who inject drugs)

  • Demonstrated ability for community sensitivity

  • Other requirements

  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Telugu

  • Proven ability to work proactively, balance many priorities, remain flexible and carry out tasks in an efficient and timely manner

  • Ability to work well on a team and coordinate with different work styles
